Jeffrey Micher began avidly researching family history a year and a half ago. As four of his great grandparents were Slovak immigrants who settled in the area of Connellsville, PA, and having a strong affinity for learning foreign languages, Jeffrey quickly realized, unequivocally, that he was to learn Slovak. Thus began his quest of, and zest for, the Slovak language, starting first with self-teaching materials, then hiring a tutor, then taking classes at the University of Pittsburgh. Jeffrey believes that knowledge of, and ability with, the Slovak language can be an enriching part of developing a strong link to Slovak heritage and culture. But Jeffrey also knows that learning a new language can be daunting. So he has begun sharing what he's learned with fellow Slovak students, and aspires to be a strong supporter of others who set out to learn their ancestral tongue. One of Jeffrey's dreams is to start a Slovak language revival movement among descendants of Slovaks living here in the United States. Jeffrey holds a Master of Science in Language Technologies from Carnegie Mellon University, a Master of Linguistics from the University of Pittsburgh, and has done extensive teaching of English as a second language, as well as teaching English in France and French in Pittsburgh. He is eager to learn more and help others learn more as they connect with their Slovak heritage. He will do this by sharing his knowledge of Slovak, his expertise in linguistics and language teaching, and his personal experience with language learning. Don't be surprised if he asks you how much Slovak you know!
